Overview
Climbing the Eiger via the Iconic Mittellegi Ridge: A 5-Day Guided Alpine Program The Eiger—often nicknamed “The Ogre”—is a spectacular and famous 3,970 meter peak in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps. Despite not reaching the 4,000 meter mark, it remains one of the most desired summits in the Alps. Its infamous 1,800 meter North Face has shaped mountaineering history, known for legendary ascents. Together with the Mönch and the Jungfrau, the Eiger forms one of the most iconic mountain trios in Europe. The Mittellegi Ridge is now the classic and most frequently climbed route to the summit, though far from easy. From the Mittellegihütte to the top, climbers face roughly 600 meters of exposure on a sharp, airy ridge combining rock, mixed terrain, and snow. The constant views over the dramatic North Face make it one of the most striking ridgelines in the Alps. Our 5-day “Eiger via the Mittellegi Ridge” program includes expert mountain guiding, proper acclimatization, and technical preparation. The training phase takes place around the Chamonix valley, tackling shorter but similarly demanding ridges to refine movement, build altitude fitness, and ensure you’re ready for the Eiger’s challenges.

Facts about climbing the Eiger (3,970 m)
Important Information: Ascent of the Eiger (3,970 m) via the Mittellegi Ridge with Acclimatization and IFMGA Mountain Guide
The meeting point is in Chamonix at 18:00 on the day before the program starts. After a presentation of the itinerary, we complete a thorough gear check and prepare the backpacks. If anything is missing, the guide can assist you with renting or purchasing equipment in local shops.
Although the Eiger does not reach 4,000 m, proper acclimatization and technical preparation are essential. The program includes prior climbs to refine movement on mixed terrain and allow the guide to evaluate whether each participant is truly ready for the Mittellegi Ridge.
Your guide’s experience and professional judgment are key to safety. If the guide considers that technical ability or physical condition are not sufficient to complete the ascent under safe conditions, their decision must be respected. In that case, an alternative peak or route adapted to your level may be proposed.
Weather conditions in the high Alps can change quickly and may prevent the ascent, requiring a Plan B for safety reasons.
The maximum ratio for the Mittellegi Ridge is 1 participant per guide.
For groups of two, the acclimatization days can be done together, but a second guide will join for summit day.
Is this program for everyone?
The Eiger is not for everyone. This ascent is recommended for climbers with previous mountaineering experience and confident use of crampons and an ice axe. If you have already climbed Mont Blanc, completed the Cosmiques Ridge, or tackled other mixed routes like some Scottish winter climbs, you are likely ready for the challenge. Even so, we strongly recommend following a structured training plan before joining the program to ensure you arrive in top form.
How experienced are our guides?
Our guides hold full UIAGM / IFMGA certification, which means they have passed the highest levels of training and standards required to guide on any mountain in the world. Many are among the world’s top alpinists, with ascents on routes that 99% of people could hardly imagine. With them, you are truly in the safest and most qualified hands.

FAQs
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancellation & Refund Policy – KooKoo Climb
At KooKoo Climb, we strongly recommend that all participants take out comprehensive cancellation insurance. This protects you in the event you need to cancel your trip, face flight delays that affect your arrival, or encounter any unexpected issue that prevents you from joining the program.
Voluntary Cancellations by the Client
You may cancel your reservation under the following refund conditions. All cancellations must be communicated in writing via email to KooKoo Climb.
Refund Conditions
- 90% Refund – For cancellations made 90 days or more before the start of the program.
Note: if you paid a 10% deposit, this portion is non-refundable.
- 50% Refund – For cancellations made between 89 and 60 days before the program start date.
- 0% Refund – For cancellations made 59 days or less before the start of the program.
Refunds will be calculated based on payments already made and received. If no payment has yet been made, the above percentages represent the amount still owed by the client.
Cancellations Due to Weather or Mountain Conditions
If the guide determines that weather, terrain, or mountain conditions make it unsafe to attempt the Eiger, KooKoo Climb will offer one of the following alternatives:
a) A comparable activity in a nearby, safer location.
b) The option to postpone the activity to a later date.
c) Full cancellation of the activity. In this case, the agency will retain 10% of the total trip cost to cover management and administrative expenses.
If the client chooses to decline Option (a), the standard cancellation policy listed above will continue to apply.
Only the guide may decide to cancel a climb due to safety conditions. In exceptional cases, KooKoo Climb may choose—at its sole discretion—to issue a partial or full refund (minus transaction fees).
Unforeseen Changes During the Program
If a taxi, transfer, or other transport service is required during the program—due to weather, storms, snowfall, natural events, or changes in the planned route—this will be considered an additional shared expense among participants.
Any additional unforeseen costs that exceed the original program price will be the responsibility of the participants.
Mandatory Insurance
By confirming your booking, you agree to obtain appropriate insurance that includes:
- Coverage for accidents in high-altitude mountain environments
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation services
- You may be asked to provide proof of insurance before the program begins.
If I come on my own, can I be part of a group?
Absolutely!
The maximum ratio for the Mittellegi Ridge is 1 participant per guide.
For groups of two, the acclimatization days can be done together, but a second guide will join for summit day.
Do I need previous experience in climbing or mountaineering to do the climb?
Yes, climbing the Eiger is a serious adventure and this is suitable for those who already have some experience in rugged exposed terrain. If you have climbed some alpine ridges, or Mont Blanc or you are an active climber tackling Scottish winter climbs every season, then you can join the program.
